In the last two weeks, we have found four praying mantises in our yard, three a grassy green color, and one a pinkish brown. The Seek app identifies all as the Chinese Mantis, an insect native to Asia that was accidentally introduced in Philadelphia during the late 19th century. By the look of it, I'm not sure that it didn't fall from a meteor instead.
Two of the green mantises were in green weeds or on the stone wall, but the third was rather feisty and landed on the back of a brave little boy.
The brownish pink one has been on the same seedum plant for days, devouring unsuspecting honey bees and every day its abdomen looks larger. Will it soon lay an egg case?
